Hiraki Sawa

Description

This is the first monograph dedicated to the intimate dreamscapes created in Hiraki Sawa’s delicate animations, and it was published on the occasion of the artist’s solo exhibition at the Musée des beaux-arts et d'archéologie and the Musée du Temps in Besançon, France, organized by Le Consortium of Dijon, France.

Sawa uses lo-tech video animation to create poetic dreamscapes, which are subtle reflections on ideas of time and motion, travel and mobility, displacement and dislocation. Certain leitmotifs recur throughout the films—a child's rocking horse, migrating animals, model jet planes—objects which play out notions of travel and nomadism, of being at home and thinking of elsewhere.
