Teresa Margolles at Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá

Congratulations to Teresa Margolles on the opening of Estorbo, on view through May 26 at the Bogotá Museum of Modern Art (MAMBO).

Estorbo is the product of Teresa Margolles's extensive investigation into the Venezuelan migration crisis. Through photography, video, installation and performance, Margolles documents and denounces the social and economic structures that have created the flight of Venezuelans into Colombia, one of the largest mass migrations in Latin American history.

Margolles will exhibit the results of fieldwork conducted on the Simón Bolívar bridge, one of the highly charged conncective points between Colombia and Venezuela, questioning the physical and mental limits of a border. The project takes its title from the Spanish word “estorbo” (obstruction), which is often used to talk about something uncomfortable or bothersome. With this exhibition, Margolles brings to the forefront ugly realities all too often dismissed as uncomfortable truths. Her synthesis of activism and artmaking are critical in a global milieu defined by an upsurge of intolerance and xenophobia at every level.

Estorbo comprises a new body of work conceived by Margolles for this exhibition, including a daily performance that will progressively build a environmental piece that will expand throughout the space.
